Surendra D Shetty is partner at the Firm. He started his career as a litigation lawyer with MV Kini Law Firm from the inception of the firm itself. He specialises in property law, arbitration and documentation, company schemes. He is also an expert in service matters particularly under Articles 226 and 227 of the Indian Constitution.
S.D. Shetty has been instrumental in some of the Firm’s high-profile cases relating to property law. He represented the International Airports Authority of India (IAAI) to help prove it’s ownership of a huge tract of airport land at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. The long-running case went from the lower court all the way to the Supreme Court. The decision was given in his client’s favour proving ownership of the property valued at over Rs.10 billion.
His other landmark cases involved the resolution of the service matter between the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company and its concerned 12,000 employees. The favourable decision taken in favour of S.D. Shetty’s client in the High Court at Bombay was upheld in the country’s Supreme Court. Whether it is cases relating to infrastructure law or highways, airports or family property disputes, his diverse experience in all spares of law has been commendable. He advised Air India on its privatisation that Article 12 of Constitution of India can’t be applied to it, hence Writ Petition will not be maintainable, and Air India benefited immensely.
The Law Firm that S.D. Shetty joined, fresh out of law school at Mumbai University in 1986, is virtually unrecognisable to him today. From the tens of clients that the Firm had back then, to the MVKini of today, represents thousands of clients, both in the public and private sector, in complex practice areas across the country.
